The BAPIO Training Academy (BTA), in collaboration with the University of South Wales and funded by the MPS Foundation, is undertaking a significant evaluation of a Comprehensive Generic Induction Programme designed for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) starting their careers in the United Kingdom.
This initiative aims to enhance the wellbeing and confidence of IMGs while supporting their clinical practice and promoting both clinician and patient safety. The induction programme provides structured support across three key domains: clinical, educational, and pastoral. It is being delivered nationwide to IMGs working across various healthcare settings, organisations, and specialties.
The Growing Role of IMGs in the NHS
For 75 years, the National Health Service (NHS) has relied on IMGs to expand its workforce. The number of IMG doctors joining the UK medical workforce has increased significantly, with 10,589 IMG doctors joining in 2021, compared to 3,957 in 2016. Despite their critical role, IMGs often face challenges when transitioning to UK healthcare. These include:
- Adapting to new communication styles
- Understanding and integrating into UK medical culture and practices
- Managing complex healthcare needs in unfamiliar environments
These challenges can impact IMGs’ mental health, professional confidence, and career progression, making structured support essential.
A Comprehensive Approach to Integration
The national induction programme is designed to address these challenges by equipping IMGs with essential knowledge of NHS structures, multidisciplinary teamwork, and UK-specific medical practices. Additionally, the programme includes educator workshops aimed at helping trainers support IMG integration across socio-cultural, professional, and clinical dimensions.
The programme is being systematically evaluated at different stages, with findings set to inform best practices for standardised IMG induction. This research has the potential to influence medical education and workforce support initiatives globally.
Beyond benefiting IMGs themselves, this initiative is expected to enhance team dynamics, healthcare organisations, and ultimately, patient care by fostering better-integrated and well-supported medical professionals within the NHS.
With this landmark initiative, BTA and its partners are shaping a stronger, more inclusive, and sustainable future for international medical professionals in the UK.
